Towards an open-hardware open-software toolkit for robust low-cost eye tracking in HCI applications

چکیده
Eye tracking has long held the promise of being a useful methodology for human-computer interaction ranging from explicit control of computer interfaces to adaptive interfaces based on the user’s attentional state. A number of barriers have stood in the way of the integration of eye tracking into everyday applications, including the intrusiveness, robustness, availability, and price of eye-tracking systems. To lower these barriers, we have developed the openEyes toolkit. The toolkit consists of an open-hardware design for a digital eye tracker that can be built from low-cost off-theshelf components and a set of open-source software tools for digital image capture, manipulation, and analysis in eyetracking applications. We expect that the availability of this toolkit will facilitate the development of eye-tracking applications and the eventual integration of eye tracking into the next generation of everyday human computer interfaces. We discuss the methods and technical challenges of lowcost eye tracking as well as the design decisions that produced our current system. Finally, we discuss the benefits of an open-hardware and open-software approach as well as ways we can facilitate the integration of eye-tracking techniques into the next generation of human computer inter-

iAppraise: A Manual Machine Translation Evaluation Environment Supporting Eye-tracking
We present iAppraise: an open-source framework that enables the use of eye-tracking for MT evaluation. It connects Appraise, an opensource toolkit for MT evaluation, to a low-cost eye-tracking device, to make its usage accessible to a broader audience. It also provides a set of tools for extracting and exploiting gaze data, which facilitate eye-tracking analysis. In this paper, we describe diff...
متن کاملSET: a pupil detection method using sinusoidal approximation
Mobile eye-tracking in external environments remains challenging, despite recent advances in eye-tracking software and hardware engineering. Many current methods fail to deal with the vast range of outdoor lighting conditions and the speed at which these can change. This confines experiments to artificial environments where conditions must be tightly controlled. Additionally, the emergence of l...
متن کاملDo-It-Yourself Eye Tracker: Low-Cost Pupil-Based Eye Tracker for Computer Graphics Applications
Eye tracking technologies offer sophisticated methods for capturing humans’ gaze direction but their popularity in multimedia and computer graphics systems is still low. One of the main reasons for this are the high cost of commercial eye trackers that comes to 25,000 euros. Interestingly, this price seems to stem from the costs incurred in research rather than the value of used hardware compon...
متن کاملStarburst: A robust algorithm for video-based eye tracking
Knowing the user’s point of gaze has significant potential to enhance current humancomputer interfaces. The primary obstacle of integrating eye movements into interfaces is the availability of a reliable, low-cost open-source eye-tracking system. Towards making such a system available to interface designers, we have developed a hybrid eye-tracking algorithm that integrates feature-based and mod...
متن کاملA Fast, Robust, Automatic Blink Detector
Introduction “Blink” is defined as closing and opening of the eyes in a small duration of time. In this study, we aimed to introduce a fast, robust, vision-based approach for blink detection. Materials and Methods This approach consists of two steps. In the first step, the subject’s face is localized every second and with the first blink, the system detects the eye’s location and creates an ope...
